Loituma
Loituma is a Finnish quartet whose members combine the Finnish vocal tradition with the sounds of the kantele. Loituma were selected Ensemble of the Year at the 1997 Kaustinen Folk Music Festival.
Loituma has made Ieva’s Polka known worldwide.
”Ievan polkka” (Savo Finnish for ”Ieva’s Polka”) is a popular Finnish song with lyrics printed in 1928[1] and written by Eino Kettunen to a traditional Finnish polka tune. The song is sung in very heavy Eastern Savonian dialects spoken in North Karelia. It takes the point of view of a young man, telling about a woman named Ieva (Eva or Eeva in standard Finnish) who sneaks out to where everyone is dancing to a polka, and dances all night. The song is often confused with being a traditional song, but Eino Kettunen is still under copyright.
Musicians around the world have made cover versions of Ieva’s Polka. Here are a couple of them

Surprising vocal quartet. A great performance in the combination of their voices. It is pleasant to discover the sounds of indigenous music from other countries. Good your choice My greetings and good Sunday

I enjoyed the polka very much, and I was amazed how the elderly gentleman could still move!!!
The first time I heard about polka in Finland was when I was watching the movie ”Leningrad cowboys go America”.

Thank you for your comment. I am glad that you enjoyed the polka.
Yes, the eldery gentelman ”puts impressively with his leg” (pani koreasti jalalla) as we say in Finnish. It is funny how sayings live their own life. When everything goes well, impressively, the dancer is dancing with one leg.
Leningrad cowboys made good music and films also.
Take care

I come from a Polish family that loves to polka even today in the United States. It is very popular at weddings. In my younger years, I joined in playing the accordion.

Thank you for the excellent information on your Polish family. The accordion is also a trendy instrument in Finland and polka and folk music in general.
Take care 🙂 🙂 🙂

It is a big compliment when a song someone has written relatively recently becomes mistaken for a folk song. Thank you for the history of this song and for the video examples. I especially like the club version with dancing men.

I like the musical group. They remind me of a group of four Swedish women who toured my part of Canada two witers ago — beautiful harmonies and overtones. But cannot recall their name at the moment! And who cannot love the Georgian folk dancing. 🙂
