I upload this article here now in good time so that people will be aware of this Carol in English at this Xmas. The annual Christmas Post Card will come later on.
Joulupuu on rakennettu -laulu on julkaistu vuonna 1876. Tuolloin vanha suomalainen kansanlaulu sai ensimmäiset jälkipolville tutut sanansa, jotka kirjoitti kirkkoherra Gustaf Oskar Schöneman (1839 – 1894). Laulu oli osa Uusi Kuva Aapinen –kirjaa.
Säestykseni on tarkoituksella se perinteinen, jonka me kaikki suomalaiset olemme koulussa kuulleet. Uskon, että näin säestys palvelee parhaiten niitä, jotka haluavat laulaa säestyksen kanssa joko suomeksi tai englanniksi.
Christmas Tree song (Joulupuu on rakennettu) is old Finnish folklore. It became a Christmas Carol in 1876 when Vicar Gustaf Oskar Schöneman (1839 – 1894) wrote words for it. Children have always liked the song. They want to sing it while dancing around the Christmas tree.
My accompaniment is very traditional, and I believe that it is the best option when you want to learn the song in English.
PS Gustaf Oskar Schönemanin kirjailijanimi oli G. O. Schönemann.
PPS Gustaf Oskar Schöneman’s pen name was G. O. Schönemann

I know, Finns love Christmas (the previous owner of my house in Germany was from Finland, had Christmas all year long!). I don’t feel this Spirit anymore 😦 Oh, did you visit my other blog https://mycastle.video.blog/ ? Hugs and kisses

Thank you for your comment.
Well, there was a time when I didn’t feel the Spirit, but now when I am older, I have got it back.
All Finns don’t love Christmas, and for many, it means only presents and good food.
I visit mycastle.video.blog
Hugs and kisses 🙂 🐻 🙂

Dear YRosa, Thank visiting my other blog 🙂 I felt the Christmas Spirit when I”ve been living in North America. Life was so hard, but good. But now… too much work, to many efforts and I’m old and tired and don’t wanna to work hard just to please my familly. Many hugs – Ewa

Thank you for your wishes.
I saw that words are written by Wladimir Kokko. Because I don’t know the song’s Russian title, I can’t find the song on the Internet, and can’t say whether Kokko is a writer or translator. Perhaps he is both. I googled his name, and I found one Wladimir Kokko, who is Ingrian and his mother language is Finnish. If he is the man, words must be translated fine by him. If you know the name of the song in Russian, please let me know it. Perhaps those girls are Ingrian too. They are pronouncing Finnish correct 🙂

The original name is “Осень» (Autumn). The lyric and music author is Yuriy Shevchuk. He is the leader of S.Petersburg group DDT.

Thank you for the information. The versions have different stories, but I believe that Wladimir and Yuri know each other because both of them are from St. Petesburg 😉 Of course, if I had googled a right Wladimir 🙂

The song you presented here is beautiful but a little bit melancholy.

Many of the old Finnish Xmas Carols are written in minor scales 🙂

I have simplified over the years, but I still love Christmas, the decorations, the special food, the spiritual engagement, the generosity toward the poor, and the music.

I am curious whether there is any linguistic connection between Russian and Finnish. Since they share a border region, I suppose they must have some cross-over words, but honestly, nothing sounded familiar in any of the songs I listened to. Why do you post some of your writing in Cyrrilic then–this is what first made me curious. Thank you.

Thank you for your comment.
Finnish and Russian have no linguistic connection. Finnish is not even Indo-Europian language. Of course, some Russian words have come in the Finnish language during the times, but the younger generation does not use them. Please watch this video on the subject.
I have included it in my article https://yrosa.wordpress.com/2019/11/11/kaunis-kieleni-mun-my-beautiful-language/ I use Cyrillic alphabets when I write in Russian.
All the best to you

Thank you for your comment. I am not a native Russian speaker, and that’s why I sometimes construct these tables for myself to be surer of what I am doing. They are quite a time assuming, so I thought, why not share them with others too. It makes me feel that my efforts are better rewarded.
Moreover, I don’t have any native speakers to spellcheck my writings, but I have a Finnish friend who has studied Russian for decades. The idiomatic expression is my and his weak point. Although when I was a child, I heard a lot of Russian because my grandmother was a native speaker and many other family members. My aunt was the last one who spoke it fluently, but now they all are gone, and I don’t get help from them. I am also relatively old and often think that my time is going to run out in this case.
If there were an excellent digital translator, I wouldn’t bother to study any foreign language at my age. It is not such, and I must keep on working because in the world are only 5.5 million people who speak Finnish, and we all now that poetry is a very marginal subgenre in the world. My subjects are not those which people usually have in their minds. Being so, I wouldn’t get many readers if I use only Finnish.
But have a lovely weekend 🙂
